In Ferbane, County Ottaly, Ireland there is a high cross called the Gallen Priory Cross which is thought to date back to 950 A.D. The Celtic Cross is known throughout the world as the emblem of Celtic Christianity and it can be considered the symbol of Celticness itself. Celtic Crosses began to appear during the fifth century A.D., its shape is derived from a pagan sun symbol, the sun wheel, which later became a symbol of the Christian Godhead. The sun wheel was originally a cross surrounded by a circle with a center stone representing the sun and mock suns at the four quarters. The stone at the center of the circle also represents the navel of the world. The spiral indicates unity, harmony, and love. The cross represents eternal life; its horizontal axis being the earthly world and the vertical axis the heavenly world coming together as the union of Heaven and Earth. Celtic Crosses are imbued with continuous and interwoven knot and spiral motifs symbolizing the continuity of life, death and rebirth. Celtic Crosses often have images of the Christian crucifixion, patriarchs and saints.
The Gallen Cross, an unusual cross of the Christian period, can be viewed in the grounds of Gallen Priory, together with a collection of early Christian grave slabs. The Priory, once a landlord’s residence and later a novitiate of the St. Joseph of Cluny Order, is now a nursing home. The four heads of the cross are said to represent Adam (thinking-bottom), Eve (feeling-top), Cain (intuition-right side/left hand-right brain), and Abel (sensation-left side/right brain).
Each of these “personality types” is a gate way to the central God-Head Spiral. The heads are connected to the center by serpent heads possibly representing dreams or prayer channels to the God-Head. The Gallen cross gives us a metaphor of the arms of the arms, head and torso of Christ drawing us into the Godhead symbolized in the cross’s central and outer circles.
